Off Day in Guanajuato
Sunday January 9, 2022
The music from Jardín de la Unión blasted until late into the night and it was hard to fall asleep, despite how tired I was. My chapped lips were burning from sunburn, spicy food, and margarita salt. My heels were in extreme pain from the push up to Cristo Rey in cycling sandals. In fact, I could barely walk. I woke up several times during the night but it was still dark. I got up at 7am and started my chores. I folded up my tent and sleeping bag which I had hung in the room to air. I edited yesterday’s report and then finished my laundry which had been soaking in the sink all night. I strung a drying line across the room to hang the wet clothing. I shaved and then edited my photographs from the past four days. I went downstairs for breakfast and could barely walk. I returned to the room to edit and upload reports. The blog is a lot of work. Blogger is a total pain to format, and I need to convert all my images to JPEG for Crazy Guy. If I weren’t so patient, I probably would have smashed my laptop. I patched my tubes and cleaned my chain. It was Sunday and all the bike shops were closed.
I walked around the center of town and stumbled upon Ruda where I could sit outside underneath the canopy of a beautiful tree. I had a hamburger and fries along with a few bottles of Victoria and a mezcal de la casa. I then walked over to the birthplace of Diego Rivera. Because it was Sunday, a lot of places were closed. The town, built in the early 1500's, was crammed between two steep hills, and there was an underlying tunnel system that defied the natural topography. I walked around and marveled at the narrow alleys, colorfully painted buildings, and extraordinary public spaces. Mexico features a rich cultural presence whether it be architecture, music, food, visual arts, clothing, hair styles, or dress. It’s a vibrant place. For dinner I went to Truco 7 where I had pollo con mole poblano with Victoria. Afterwards I grabbed an ice cream cone.
