• My favorite parts of the trip (west to east) were: The meandering Western Sierra Madre range between Mazatlán and Durango, The challenging ride to Zacatecas, Beautiful Zacatecas, The challenging ride to Guanajuato, Beautiful Guanajuato, Beautiful San Miguel Allende, The gorgeous ride to Valle de Bravo, Riding with the Monarch Butterflies, Volcan Toluca Nevado

• My best stories (west to east) were: The American Airlines bicycle delay, Damaging my front rim, Stealth camping in cow pastures, The flat tires, Hitting the wall on Day #11, The gorgeous silver city  hotels, The hike-a-bike to Cristo Rey, Beguiling Guanajuato, Splendid San Miguel Allende, The crazy off-road to Monte Alban

• I had over ten flat tires

• My mechanical issues included a damaged front rim (from day two), a broken front rack bolt, a missing front left pannier screw, in addition to lost gear, and a sheered Wahoo mount. 

• I had 0 rain days 

• Every day I rode in shorts, a short sleeve jersey, and sandals

• The coldest nighttime temperatures were below freezing on day #7 and close to it on day #17

• I stealth camped 9 nights

• I spent 11 nights in a hotel

• I was honked at by 2 motorists on days 10 and 14

• dozens of road kill animals were seen including dogs, cattle, & skunks)

• Wildlife documented: squirrels, coyote, crows, hawks, agave, cactus, morning glory trees

• Beer sampled: Victoria, Dos Equis

Getting to Mazatlán December 23, 2021 I’m always a nervous wreck when I begin one of these bicycle tours, and this time was no different. My last class was Tuesday and there was plenty of knucklehead late work to grade. I finally got all of my grades posted yesterday. The bike breakdown and packing was straightforward. I used the same boxes that returned with me from San Francisco last summer. Shari and Rick picked up Blanka, and my house was suddenly empty.  I hadn’t been sleeping well the past few nights. In addition to the end of semester stress, I was worried about the Omicron variant now raging through New York. What was the chance I’d catch it or bring it with me to Mexico? Trans-Mexico Day #10 January 6, 2022 Potrero de los López, AG to Lagos de Moreno, JA 128Km Start 8:47am Finish 7:01pm Ride Time: 7:40 Ascent: 1306m Descent: 1408m Tour Total Km: 1,019 Details at:  https://ridewithgps.com/trips/81183121 I slept well behind the cactus, down the road from Potrero de los López. I was warm throughout the night, and perhaps didn’t need my long underwear. I got up during the middle of the night and didn’t get jabbed by a cactus. I woke up with the light and it was a slow pack up. I stumbled over a tent stake and broke it. I had to patch my front tire, which had gone completely flat. I flattened all of my beer cans and tied them to my rack pack. I had probably been visible from the road. Two motorists a car and a motorcycle had passed me while I was packing up. Trans-Mexico Day #2 December 28, 2021 Copala, SI    to El Palmito, SI 51.7Km Start 7:05am, Finish 1:27pm Ride Time: 5:26 Ascent: 1979M Descent: 588M Tour Total Km: 107 Details at:  https://ridewithgps.com/trips/80585348 I believe I slept reasonably well last night, right besides the beautiful old colonial San Jose de Copala church, built in 1748. I’m sure that I slept because I remembered two dreams. But the cacophonous noise from the roosters and the barking dogs seemed like a constant throughout the night. At first light I decided to insert my earplugs, but couldn’t fall back asleep. I slowly packed up, ate my three bananas, and pedaled back out of town towards the libre. There had been condensation in the tent, and I was wearing my rain jacket as a shell over a short sleeve jersey and cycling shorts. My feet were comfortable without socks.
